Philadelphia weather is classified as humid subtropical, a fact attributed to the city’s positioning in the northern periphery. The city is located at the meeting of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers on the eastern border of Pennsylvania. To the west of the city are the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean which are located to its east play an important part in moderating Philadelphia weather, reducing the effects of severe hot and cold weather.
Summer
Weather in Philadelphia during the summer months is classified as hot, sticky, and humid. The summer season begins in June and runs through to September with July and August being the hottest months of the year. Average daily temperatures reach between 29 °C and 35 °C and occasionally higher, when heat waves and high humidity hit the city. Thanks to the effect of the nearby ocean and the breezes that blow throw the city from its direction, evenings are significantly cooler due to the Ocean breezes. Towards the end of the summer, thunderstorms often occur.
On occasion the city is overwhelmed in ocean air that brings with it high humidity. Rainfall is quite evenly distributed right through the year, with the greatest amounts falling during the summer months, occasionally causing the overflow of the Schuylkill River.

Precipitation is usually evenly spread out throughout the year, with eight to twelve damp days per month at an average annual rate of 1,070 mm. July is the wettest month averaging 4.39 inches.
